House at the Knights with sgraffito decoration

The corner house (no. 11) is the most interesting on the market, dating from before 1591, with a four-sided bay window. At the height of the first floor (the second was added after the mid-nineteenth century), it is decorated with Renaissance sgraffito decoration with biblical and ancient motifs, dating back to the first quarter of the seventeenth century. Also noteworthy is the arcaded cloister in the courtyard.

  1. Around 1700 it was installed in the upper part of the square, in the shape of a polygonal stone tank with a prismatic pillar, with a base in the middle. It was a source of drinking water for the inhabitants of the inner part of the city. On the pillar there is an allegorical sculpture of Pomona with a cornucopia and a shield with the coat of arms of the Dietrichsteins.
  2. In the lower part of the market there is a Baroque pole – a sculpture of the Holy Trinity from the years 1723-1724, sometimes also called the Plague Column. The building according to the excellent design of A.J. Prenner was recommended by Prince Walter Ksawery née Dietrichstein to the stonemason Andreas Steinbock, and the sculptural decorations (of St. John of Nepomuk, St. Francis Xavier and St. Charles Borromeo) were made by Ignacy Lengelacher. The monument standing on a hexagonal base with three Tuscan columns is closed by a triangular pyramid with the symbol of the Holy Spirit standing on the heavenly vault, with angels in the clouds and sculptures of God the Father and Christ. The pole was restored in 1897 and later, in 1997-1998.
  3. Holy Hill is located on a hill overlooking the town of Mikulov in the Czech Republic. It is situated on the outskirts of the town, offering panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. The hill is adorned with religious structures and greenery, creating a serene and tranquil atmosphere.

Mikulov Castle: A Storied Legacy

At the heart of Mikulov lies its crowning jewel, Mikulov Castle. This architectural masterpiece has evolved through various styles, from its humble beginnings in the 13th century to its splendid Renaissance and Baroque elements. Explore the castle’s grand halls, visit the Castle Chapel adorned with frescoes, and ascend the Tower for breathtaking views of the town and surrounding vineyards.

Castle History

Before the early Baroque garden with a dominant large main parterre (levelled space) was built, there had been a secluded garden of an irregular triangle layout on the southern hillside of the chateau. The oldest part of the garden was established at the end of the l6th century by Adam Dietrichstein, who drew his inspiration from late Renaissance Italy, a frequent destination of his travels as an imperial diplomat. He utilized an Immensely popular principle of that time and blended the garden with the surrounding landscape, dividing the space into three rhythmic areas interconnected by a viewing axis. When facing the southern border of the town, the ornamental garden was connected to a kitchen garden and the orchards below the chateau. The third part was a flat area resembling a forest – the Mikulov Game Preserve.

The ornamental garden (ahead) was surrounded by an old line of walls and outer wards connected to the chateau palace. Although the garden was not very large, it offered breath-taking views of Mikulov’s surroundings that were also taken into account by Adam’s successor, Cardinal Franz Dietrichstein (1570-1636). By building a series of staircases, he connected the Renaissance garden with the newly built parterre and thus created a new east-bound viewing axis (A). A scenic fountain set in a niche, similar to a grotto (artificial cave), was built at the top of the central double staircase as a counterpart to the chapel on the opposite Holy Hill. The fountain was decorated with an emblem of the Prince, five pyramids, and a pavilion called “prospettiva”. or a lookout (B). Standing there, one could see the panorama of the whole town stretching from the Holy Hill to the Mikulov Game Preserve. The fountain was embellished by Francesco Sala’s plastering works in the mid-17th century. All of these structures and most of the staircases were demolished at the end of the 18th century due to the construction of a carriage road. The chateau garden has, therefore, lost much of its original appearance. Only one of the several staircases with small architectural features has survived to this day.

A balcony with plastering, which depicts scenes from ancient mythology, was built on the highest floor at the head of the southern palace wing of the chateau around 1630.

It followed the Renaissance axis heading towards the Mikulov Game Preserve. During the Baroque reconstruction of the chateau in the 1820s, the balcony was replaced by a lower-built salla terrena with frescoes of the same mythological theme.
