History of Primošten

Primošten has a rich history dating back to the 7th century when it was settled by Croats. Throughout the centuries, the town was ruled by various powers including the Venetians and the Austro-Hungarian Empire. In the early 19th century, Primošten became part of the Kingdom of Dalmatia, which was under the rule of the Habsburg monarchy.

One of the most iconic landmarks in Primošten is the Church of St. George, which dates back to the 15th century. The church is located on the highest point of the town and offers stunning views of the surrounding area. Another must-see attraction is the Old Town, which features narrow streets and traditional stone houses.

Primošten Donkey

The bronze donkey statue in Primošten apparently has a colorful backstory, according to local legend. According to the legend, the town was threatened by pirates many years ago who intended to burn down the olive groves that surrounded it. A herd of donkeys emerged and started braying loudly, driving off the pirates and saving the town while the inhabitants prayed for a miracle to save their crops.

The locals commissioned a bronze statue of a donkey to commemorate the animals’ valor, which was then erected in the town plaza. The statue has come to represent Primošten, and tourists frequently stop by to snap pictures there.

While the legend may be just that ? a legend ? the statue remains an important part of Primošten’s history and culture. It serves as a reminder of the town’s resilience and the importance of the local olive groves to the community. Visitors to Primošten can admire the statue and even rub its nose for good luck.
