The Town of Náchod
The town of Nachod is located in the district of Hradec Králové, approximately 100 kilometers southeast of Prague. The town has a rich history and is considered one of the most beautiful towns in the country. It is famous for its medieval architecture, which can be seen in its many churches and other buildings.
The town was founded in 1326 by King John of Luxembourg as a fortified town called Náchod (“Naše Hora”) meaning “Our Mountain”. It was originally built on an ancient hill fort, occupied by Slavs since the 9th century. The original name referred to a local legend that Saint Adalbert (or Saint Wenceslas) had lived there during his missionary work among the Slavs.
Náchod became one of the most important towns in northern Bohemia during the Hussite wars and even today it has several monuments related to them (such as the Church of St. James). In 1583, Nachod was besieged by Swedish troops during their invasion of Bohemia (the so-called “Second” Silesian War), but successfully defended itself from attack thanks to its strong walls.
